Welcome to our Year 5 page for all our News and information
In Year 5, we have an exciting assortment of topics this academic year for your child. We follow a topic-based approach and make cross curricular links where possible, allowing children to make connections between areas of learning.
In the Autumn term, children learn about the Romans in History and visit the Space Centre in Leicester as part of their Science topic and this really brings learning to life.
They have an opportunity to present their Christmas Carol Concert to parents, developing their confidence in performing to an audience.
In the Spring term, Anglo-Saxons and the Battle of Hastings are the focus in History and Geography with a visiting History Workshop which allows them to try different games and activities from that era.
They explore animals and plants in Science and link this to work on line, light and shadow in our Art and Design topic – Natures art.
In the Summer term, children will be learning about farming in History and Geography and take part in an off site visit to local allotments.
For more information about the curriculum each half term and how you can help your child at home, please visit the section Curriculum Overviews/Information.
Online homework will continue this year and we set work to allow our children to both consolidate their learning from class as well as move their learning on. We will be using a range of platforms for our homework this year such as Education City, My Maths, Purple Mash and Serial Mash.
Instructions for weekly homework is shared on the Learning Platform Class Pages each Friday and needs to be completed by the following Friday.
Children will continue to receive reading books and are expected to read regularly at home. They should log their reading and complete a reading journal on the Boom Reader app on a weekly basis.
Spellings are given out on a Tuesday and will be tested on the following Tuesday.
Our PE sessions are as follows:
Tuesday - Swimming
Wednesday - Outdoor Games
Friday - Indoor PE
Please can we remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school with the exception of stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines these should not be worn on PE days.
We look forward to working with you over the next year to ensure your children have a valuable year. If you have any questions/queries now or throughout the year, please do not hesitate to speak to us. Thank you for your continued support.
